The Architecture of MLINK Server:
An in-depth look at the features that makes MLINK Server the most flexible and powerful data transport solution available.

A Centralized Database. MLINK Server allows you to store all the information needed to communicate with remote sites in one central location. Users can perform group-oriented operations such as task list updating, post processing, and reporting on a group basis. These features help reduce administrative costs for large-scale operations managing hundreds or thousands of remote systems.

Powerful, Flexible Session Options. The power of MLINK Server is in its ability to easily define complex schedules and tasks to meet your data transport needs. MLINK Server offers each site multiple defined sessions. A session defines scheduled communication windows and a list of tasks to be executed, along with site priorities. One or more lists of tasks may be assigned to occur in any given session. The schedule may specify days of the week, specific dates, time of day, and intervals. Schedule any combination of the following tasks:
  • Send File. Allows you to send a data file to be written on a remote system.
  • Receive File. Allows you to retrieve a remote data file to be written on a local system..
  • Local Command. Allows you to execute a command on the MLINK Server.
  • Remote Command. Allows you to send a command to be executed on the remote site.
Group tasks to meet your needs. Tasks can be schedule and/or event driven. Tasks can be set to run just once whether successful or unsuccessful or to run until complete. Alternate tasks can be defined based on the success or failure of previous tasks. Apply branch logic to your sessions to suit your needs. And creating and changing task lists and sessions is easy.
How does MLINK Server work?

What is being polled? SITES

Sites are defined in the database.
Sites can be machines on a LAN, WAN or dial-up.
Modem number, Node Name or IP address is specified.
Group Sites to simplify management: Regions, Super Stores, Mall Stores, Laptops, District Managers, etc.

What work is being done? TASKS

With MLINK Server you can automate and schedule any combination of the following tasks:
  • Send a file
  • Receive a file
  • Execute a Command on the MLINK Server
  • Execute a Command on the Remote Site

Group tasks into logical work units called task lists. Task lists can contain branching logic. For example alternate tasks can be performed based on the success or failure of previous tasks.

How is work scheduled? SESSIONS

Sessions define when your tasks are to be done. Schedules can be very simple or very complex to suit your needs. Sessions can have starting and ending times for a particular day, for a specific time range, for a date range, or for all days excluding certain days of the week, month, or year. Sites can have multiple Sessions so as to communicate multiple times over the course of a day.

Ideal for Your Environment, Now, and into the Future. MLINK is designed to work within your existing network. With a wide range of platforms and protocols supported, MLINK Server maximizes your investment for future network growth. MLINK Server:
  • Supports TCP/IP and asynchronous protocols.
  • Supports a wide range of Windows NT, UNIX, and workstation platforms.
  • Supports a variety of connection types (dial-up, satellite, frame relay, internet, and more).
Money Saving Speed and Performance. MLINK Server's file transfer technology is rich in features that ensure fast, guaranteed, error-free transmissions. For example, MLINK Server:

Fast
  • Provides advanced data compression to maximum network productivity.
  • Offers the benefits of an adjustable frame size of up to 32K, to significantly reduce line turnaround time in event of a transmission error.
Guaranteed
  • Blocks are automatically retransmitted until they are received correctly, or until the user-defined retry limit is exceeded.
Error Free
  • Provides automatic checkpoint/restart and error recovery in case of transmission failure.
  • Offers CRC checksum algorithm to ensure error detection and correction.
  • Detects broken connections.

Automatic Error Recovery. Since MLINK Server is designed to run in unattended mode, it has built-in error detection, intelligent error recovery, and detailed session reporting. MLINK Server detects all errors that occur during a session and takes the intelligent steps to recover whenever possible. For example, MLINK Server interprets and reports error codes returned by most auto-dial modems.

Rest Easy with Automatic Retries. When a connection to a remote system is unavailable, or when communication problems interrupt a session, MLINK Server automatically attempts to reconnect for a user-defined number of times. Delays may be used to allow the remote system to reset or give priority to sites not contacted. Unnecessary retransmissions are avoided by skipping files already transferred.

Manage Statistics, Reports, and Audit Trails. MLINK Server provides comprehensive statistics, status reports, and audit trails to assist you in monitoring distribution activity and trouble shooting. Reports may be generated automatically to show the number of sites completed, sites requiring retries, and failed sites. Status reports may be displayed or printed for selected sites, groups of sites, or all sites. Exception reports may be selected for failed sites.

Scalable to the Size of Your Enterprise. Available on Windows NT and most high powered UNIX platforms, MLINK Server communicates with a large number of sites through its ability to operate multiple concurrent ports. MLINK Server dynamically assigns tasks to all available ports, and gives the operator full control over port configuration at all times.

Real-time Display Of Activity. A port monitor screen provides real-time display of activity on each communications port, and comprehensive session tracing can be enabled for troubleshooting sites. All status, audit trail, and tracing information is automatically archived for future analysis. A configurable archive cycle controls the volume of information stored online.

Security. The MLINK Server site database allows you to define user names and passwords for each site. This information is verified by the remote system at the beginning of each session.

Robust Right Out of the Box. For even the most demanding solutions MLINK Server's rich feature set and flexible configuration options serves most organizations needs right out of the box. For those seeking to extend functionality by tightly integrating MLINK Server with in-house or third party applications, MLINK Servers script language, command line interface and programmers API provide the tools to accomplish the most challenging tasks.

Powerful Update Facilities. MLINK provides a variety of approaches for easy database maintenance. By using default records, including group defaults, you can modify site definitions quickly and easily. Powerful update facilities make it easy to change task lists even for a network of thousands of sites. MLINK Server can even be driven by your host applications to automatically update your site database. Macros allow you to automatically embed site numbers and dates in file names to be transferred. Distribution lists provide powerful grouping capabilities for downloads , and can be automatically deleted from the sending system upon completion.

The Only Choice For Managed Data Transport
MLINK provides features that go beyond the simple transfer of information from one system to another. This robust functionality is what differentiates MLINK from basic file transfer software products. These features help ensure the delivery of data when and where needed, and can help you meet your goals of providing greater return on investment to your organization through increased productivity and reduced network usage costs.
